The New Year Brings a Freight Acquisition

We recently heard from our National Tractor Parts Dealer Association representative Steven Haas about a new acquisition that he indicates will be a major Tforce Truck and Logo benefit for our NTPDA Members.

TForce Worldwide, a major freight company has acquired not only DLS Worldwide a business unit of R.R. Donnelley & Sons Company which was established in 2006 but also the freight side of UPS, it's less than truckload division. 

According to Steve the new partnerships could not come at a better time.  He tells us that the collective freight spend now exceeds six billion dollars annually and TForce Worldwide has even stronger carrier negotiations than before.

"We won't be immune to these continued carrier increases but we won't be affected like most others. As a matter of fact, our industry intelligence suggests that that carriers will be dialing back many of their re-seller programs and will be pulling their rates from smaller 3pls and many independent brokers.

Two More Acquisitions for All States Ag Parts

Over the past two weeks we’ve been informed that our member All States Ag Parts (ASAP) has made two more important acquisitions.  Tractor Joe of Tractor Joe LogoPlymouth, MN which specializes in on-line ag parts for tractors and other agricultural equipment and Yesterday’s Tractor Company based in Port Townsend, WA which specializes in providing antique tractor owners with valuable resources for repair and information as well as a complete line of antique tractor parts.

Yesterdays Tractor LogoJohn Dyke, CEO of All States Ag Parts said of the two acquisitions, “Both Tractor Joe and Yesterday’s Tractor allow ASAP to continue serving the vast agriculture by offering new and different products and services.  Tractor Joe brings a fully developed website operation with good traffic numbers which will supplement our existing site. Meanwhile Yesterday’s Tractor allows us to continue to serve their current and future customers and expand the current parts offering by including used parts in addition to expanding the remanufactured and new part lines.”

Member Stories - Herman Rempel

The National Tractor Parts Dealer Association has a long history of helping our members grow their business. We thought it might be a good idea to "look Herman NTPDA Board
back" and profile some of the people who were with us near the beginning. Here is a short story about Herman Rempel, a lifetime member, who along with his wife, Jeannie attended nearly 20 NTPDA Annual Meetings. We reached out to his daughter Rebecca Braun who helped us pen this story:

Herman was fascinated by all things mechanical as a young boy. In his small home town of Niverville, Manitoba, he had the first transistor radio and subscription to Popular Mechanics. Some of his early toys included a horse and saddle, a green CCM bicycle he bought for $59 in 1950 with his paper route earnings, a Hiawatha scooter, a 1946 Chev convertible (the first built after WWII), a new fiberglass red and white Vanguard boat, a 1957 Vauxhall (which had the same Zenith-built carburetor as British Ferguson tractors), and a 1967 Lincoln Continental. Mostly every vehicle he owned he rebuilt, modified, and repainted red.

His first of eight airplanes was a Piper PA11 that he rebuilt from a wind-damaged wreck. It took one year and Herman Planewas finished two weeks before his wedding. He also owned three Cessna 172s, an Alon Aircoupe, a PA12 Piper (750 hours), a Beechcraft Sport, and finally a Cutlass RG Cessna 172 with 180 hp and retractable gear. Herman’s policy was always to be paid by and pay by certified cheque. This lesson was learned as he has numerous stories of how planes and automobiles were damaged on their ways home.

He worked for 11 years with his father, John K. Rempel, at an International Harvester dealership owned by Mr. George Kehler. To feed his growing family, he started rebuilding Ford 8N and 9N tractors in his car garage. He was known for his beautifully painted tractors and implements. Eventually, his hobby-turned-business grew and required him to buy two acres outside of his home tow. The yard had an abattoir which became his first building for repairs and storage. His business kept growing which required to hire more people, buy more land, build more buildings, erect more shelving, hire more people…you get it. He eventually farmed 80 acres with 3,500 tractors – that’s a Herman joke!

Herman was a walking encyclopedia of tractor parts information. He recalled almost every part number by heart and explained how and why and with what Herman Wife Young
you could interchange it. He also had jobber parts manufactured with modifications made to make them perform better.

Worthington purchased Rempel Tractor Parts in May 1994. Herman very much appreciated the way they treated him and enjoyed the five additional years he stayed in the business, including two winters in Sikeston, Missouri. There was no ownership stress, management and customers valued his knowledge, and he grew his relationships and formed new ones.

Former customers called him for information so he thought it would be good if he had a few replacement parts on-hand. Herman had a giant auction sale of parts and tools in 2017, so you can imagine that those “few” parts expanded out of his garage and basement and into storage trailers.

HErman Wife NowHe is a man of integrity, a wonderful storyteller, and is generous and empathetic. He was bighearted with his time and resources at their churches and in their communities.

He married the love of his life, Jeannie Buhr, in October 1964 and together they had four beautiful children. Now their family has grown to 24 with everyone included! They fully and happily retired when they moved from Winnipeg, Manitoba to Calgary, Alberta in December 2017 to be close to their daughters.

Combine World to All States Ag Parts

NTPDA Member and North American agricultural parts supplier All States Ag Parts (ASAP) has acquired Combine World a Canadian company that specializes in Combine World Logo new and used parts for combines and swathers.  In announcing the acquisition John Dyke, CEO of ASAP said, “This is a great acquisition for us, Combine World complements our line of tractor parts being offered at Fawcett Tractor Supply (Ontario, Canada) and positions us to deliver tractor, combine and other ag parts to the farming community in Canada.” 

Dyke said the former owner, Charlie Smith, will remain in place as a valuable resource during the transition of ownership. All current employees of Combine World will be offered employment with All States Ag Parts. In the Charlie Smith Phoenixannouncement Smith talked about how being part of ASAP will bring even more opportunity to the his customers, “Being part of All States Ag Parts is a great opportunity to improve our ability to take care of customers.” said Charlie Smith, “We’ll have access to our current combine parts inventory while growing our tractor parts selection. The Elstow, SK location will continue to operate under the Combine World name. Combine World also operates a satellite location in Alexander, MB.

Nashville 2021 Annual Meeting - Cancelled

In what was a tough decision by the NTPDA Board of Directors the 2021 Nashville Annual Meeting has been cancelled. Over the past several weeks it was Nashville Skyline becoming more clear that the vast majority of our membership had made the decision to skip the event. This past weekend President Scott and Vice President Trey had some discussions about the numbers and, of course, the bombing which happened just blocks from our hotel. 

President Scott sent a note to each Board Member asking for their input and the group voted 8 to 2 to cancel. President Scott did not vote and would have only done so if there had been a tie.  We will be holding a Board Meeting Conference Call during the time that we had been scheduled for Nashville to accomplish the business of the Association. 

In addition if you had pre-paid your registration we'll be making reimbursements as soon as Kim gets back in the office.  If you made room reservations we urge you to call and cancel as soon as possible.

What's Next?

Now your staff is working to make sure we connect with each member who had indicated they were going to go to Nashville. We are also connecting with the hotel, the restaurant, transportation, the Jack Daniel's Distillery and others involved.  In addition we're also changing up The Bulletin and removing information about our 2021 event.  That issue should be in your hands in the next couple of days.

Now it's on to making plans for our 2021 Summer Meeting which is scheduled for Portland and our 2022 Annual Meeting and Trade Show which is scheduled for California. Our focus will be to create some outstanding events that will help each of our members and their businesses.

On a personal note you need to know that we worked hard to make this happen but in the end it was not to be.  You should also know that NTPDA Leadership took on the task to, behind the scenes, continue to keep everybody in the loop. We've had near daily phone calls and text messages.  Our thanks to President Scott and the entire Board of Directors for their input and work.  Thank you too for being an NTPDA Member...it matters.


A Membership Win - Win

A couple of weeks ago I got a message from President Scott that we might want to connect with his credit card processing agent Andy Goranson about themACCESS Payment Processing becoming an Associate Member. So I made the call, offered “the pitch” and we had a great conversation. Andy seemed interested and a day later said his company Access Payment Processing was “in”. Andy, by the way, is the president of the company.

The next step in becoming a member is that we circulate some of the new member data among our existing members so they have the opportunity to offer comments and ask questions. That email was sent out and within a couple of hours I get a call from Andy asking, “So am I a member because one of your members wants to do business with us!”  It was the fastest turn around I’ve ever seen.

Access Growth ImageMary Eisenmann from Eisenmann Supplies, based in Madison, Nebraska, saw the email and called Andy asking about switching out her current credit card processing service for Access. When I spoke with Mary she said their processing company was “OK” but, “I really do want to do business with a company that focuses on customer service and a person who we can trust. Those are the qualities I got from my conversation with Andy.”

Andy tells me that he sent her a new credit card machine, talked her through the setup and said that he plans to make a personal visit soon. Oh, one other thing:  The switch saved Eisenmann Supplies a couple of thousand dollars a year in fees.  And Mary indicates the switch was “seamless”.

Yes, there is real value in membership.

Should I Stay or Should I GO...

You're no doubt wondering if the National Tractor Parts Dealer Association (NTPDA) is moving forward with our Annual Meeting scheduled to take place in Man Confused Question mark January, on site, in Nashville. The Board of Directors have been polled by our president and the overwhelming response is, "Let's Go to Nashville!" 

Now, to be sure, we're working on implementing the wishes of the Board right now. We're not exactly sure what this will look like or how it will all come together in four months. But we've got several options and those are being considered and there, as we're sure you can imagine, lots of logistics included.  Some time ago it was decided that the group wanted less speakers and more time to network and socialize...so there is that. The Trade Show portion of the meeting is still up in the air and depends on what our Associate Members wish to do.

While lots of work has already been underway we've had to change some things up due to COVID19. So, while we're still four months out you need to know we're doing what we can to be able to present our members with an event they will enjoy.

And, finally a little music from The Clash. Why not...it's 2020!

Got News?

Every weekday we, at NTPDA, reach out to our current, former and potential members just to check in, thank them for their membership, encourage membership and better explain the benefits of membership. But, long before we get into all of that we explain the reason for our call, "Hi, and thanks for Man phone call plad shirt taking our call. We reach out to our members, potential members and past members just to check on you and your business. Tell me, how are things with you and your family?"

We can tell you that the overwhelming response has been very positive. Somebody actually cares and is willing to take the time to reach out. And nearly every call we've been making we're hearing reports that business in the agriculture world is solid. It could be a combination of farmers/ranchers having the time to focus on repair or it could be lower prices are forcing many do DIY or it could be that they are seeing value in their relationship with their parts supplier.

In other words...business is good.

We share that with you for a reason. On each call we learn more about our members and their unique place in their community and how they reach out to customers old and new.

Just like with everything else, if you stay in touch with your customers and keep your business "top of mind" they will more likely continue to do business with you. But, just like we're doing with our membership it all takes time. But, the rewards can be very positive.

Just a reminder...if you've got news about your business or a story you want to share...like the onion story we heard last week from our member Steven Sparks at Nyssa Tractor & Implement. Check that HUGE yard!  Did you know that the biggest user of onions isn't the consumer but schools and restaurants?  And because so many restaurants and schools have shut down many farmers are having to "dump" their onion crop because it's way too expensive to try to hold them. And...Outback Steakhouse uses those "jumbo onions" for their famous "Bloomin' Onion" and many of them come from onion patches near Nyssa. (Photo - Chicago Tribune)
